Holladay is well known for its dense tree canopy and city officials encourage residents to maintain the canopy’s health by planting trees. The Holladay City Tree Voucher Program allows residents to redeem a voucher at participating nurseries for an approved tree species that includes Rocky Mountain juniper, Norway maple and flowering crabapple.

In the past, the application process for a tree voucher was cumbersome, but the recently updated system has streamlined and updated the application for easier approval.

“We’ve given out 12 vouchers in the last two months, and I think the Tree Committee is poised to give out a lot more,” said Holladay City Councilmember Matt Durham.

There are two voucher options: the Street Tree Voucher is for “right of way” areas, up to 15 feet from the road, and the Open Voucher allows homeowners to plant a tree anywhere on the property except space reserved for street trees. Officials remind residents that this is not a reimbursement program and receipts cannot be submitted for trees that have already been purchased.

“It’s a great program,” Durham said. “It helps maintain and grow the tree canopy in our community. So if the residents have a need for trees on their own property, whether within or outside the city’s right-of-way, you can make an application through that program.”
